"Jak wskazują najnowsze wyniki badań, itrakonazol – doustny lek przeciwgrzybiczy, stosowany głównie w leczeniu grzybicy paznokci, hamuje rozwój raka prostaty i odwleka konieczność chemioterapii u pacjentów z zaawansowanym nowotworem.

Lek przeciwgrzybiczy wydaje się hamować wzrost naczyń krwionośnych raka. Ponadto zaburza on kluczowy w inicjowaniu tworzenia nowotworu szlak biologiczny. Badania laboratoryjne wskazują, iż ludzkie nowotwory prostaty wszczepione myszom kurczyły się po podaniu itrakonazolu.

W testach klinicznych udział wzięli pacjenci cierpiący na raka gruczołu krokowego, u których doszło do przerzutów do innych organów. Osoby te nie reagowały na terapię hormonalną, będącą najskuteczniejszą metodą leczenia tego typu nowotworów. Kolejnym etapem zazwyczaj jest chemioterapia. W trakcie badań chorym podawano mniejsze lub większe dawki itrakonazolu. Okazuje się, że w ciągu 22 tygodni 48,4% mężczyzn otrzymujących duże dawki leku przeciwgrzybiczego miało ustabilizowany lub zniżkujący poziom PSA. Co więcej, u jednej trzeciej badanych zanotowano co najmniej 30-procentowy spadek poziomu tego antygenu. U 12 z 14 badanych mężczyzn zauważono również mniejszą ilość komórek nowotworowych we krwi."
